The K2 feat: a symbol of rebirth for Italy
The epic ascent of K2 in 1954 represented more than just a mountaineering achievement; it became a symbol of national pride for an Italy still wounded by the devastation of World War II. On August 3 of that year, a coded message sent from Skardu, one of the closest Pakistani towns to K2, officially confirmed the success of the expedition, sparking enthusiasm throughout the country. The news immediately occupied the front pages of the newspapers, and the mountaineers were welcomed as true heroes on their return home. Parades, ceremonies and celebrations throughout the country greeted the members of the expedition, who were compared to the soccer champions of the World Cup. The conquest of K2, the second highest mountain in the world, not only demonstrated the skill and determination of Italian mountaineers, but also marked Italy’s return to the international stage as a protagonist of world-class feats..
The planning and equipping of the venture on K2: the key to success.
The triumph on K2 was the result of meticulous preparation and state-of-the-art equipment. The expedition, led by the well-known geologist and mountaineer Ardito Desio, consisted of a select team of mountaineers from all over the Italian Alps. Along the south-east ridge, known as the Sperone Abruzzi (in honor of the 1909 attempt led by the Duke of the Abruzzi), nine high altitude camps were set up, with no less than six kilometers of fixed ropes, essential for safety during the ascent. The equipment used was the best available at the time: down jackets and trousers to cope with the extreme cold, boots designed to prevent frostbite, and, for the first time, nylon ropes, an innovation that would revolutionize modern mountaineering in the years to come. This combination of preparation, technology and determination allowed the Italian mountaineers to successfully tackle one of the world’s most dangerous mountains.
The summit and the descent from K2: an endless challenge.
On July 31, 1954, at six o’clock in the evening, Lino Lacedelli, a 29-year-old from Cortina d’Ampezzo, and Achille Compagnoni, a 40-year-old mountain guide from Santa Caterina Valfurva, in Valtellina, finally reached the summit of K2 at 8611 meters. Exhausted but triumphant, the two embraced at the top of the mountain, marking a historic moment for world mountaineering. However, reaching the summit did not mark the end of the difficulties. With sunset imminent, the two mountaineers had to start their descent immediately, facing an extremely dangerous challenge without the supplementary oxygen left at the summit. Slow and tiring movements accompanied them on their descent, as they tackled the return route that took them through an icy gully, one of the greatest pitfalls of the route. It was only at eleven o’clock in the evening that they managed to reach camp VIII, welcomed by their companions, including Erich Abram and Pino Gallotti, and by the porters Isakhan and Amir Mahdi, the same man who had shared an emergency bivouac with Walter Bonatti the night before at 8,100 meters (an event that would later generate heated controversy).
At base camp, meanwhile, no one was aware of the success of the climb. Radio communications were very limited and remained silent, leaving the rest of the expedition waiting for news throughout the night, amid fears, worries and painful memories of previous incidents, such as the tragic death of Mario Puchoz, victim of a pulmonary oedema only a month earlier.
The importance of teamwork for the ascent of K2.
The success of the expedition was the result of an extraordinary collective effort. The 12-member group included some of the most illustrious figures of Italian mountaineering at the time, from every corner of the Italian Alps, from Piedmont to Friuli, and for most of them, except Erich Abram, it was their first ascent outside Europe. Among the participants were young people like Walter Bonatti, who turned 24 during the expedition, and veterans like Gino Soldà, aged 47. Each mountaineer brought with them different stories and skills: mountain guides, craftsmen, tradesmen, hoteliers and engineers. Also supporting the expedition was a cameraman from Bologna (Mario Fantin), who shot all the footage, and a doctor (Guido Pagani) who was also an experienced mountaineer. A heterogeneous team, therefore, but united by a common and unwavering passion for the mountains.
The controversy that followed the K2 feat.
Despite the triumph, the K2 expedition was followed by bitter controversy, which continued long after the mountaineers returned. At the center of the debate was the episode involving Walter Bonatti and the porter Amir Mahdi, who were forced to spend a night in the cold at 8,100 meters, due to an alleged lack of communication or a deliberate decision by Lacedelli and Compagnoni. This event caused Mahdi to suffer severe frostbite, forcing him to have his toes amputated. Bonatti, in particular, felt betrayed and unjustly accused, and claimed for years that Lacedelli and Compagnoni had deliberately indicated an incorrect position for the oxygen tank storage, to avoid sharing the credit for the climb with him. It was only decades later that Bonatti’s version was partly recognized thanks to new testimonies and documents, but the controversy left a shadow over the feat for a long time, partially obscuring it.
