Experience the world of Italian opera through the productions featured in the upcoming season. Opera Italiana classes combine Italian language, music, history, culture, and performance as students explore some of the greatest works of the Italian Opera tradition.
Throughout the course, students will learn about and discuss selected Italian operas from the Met season, exploring their stories, characters, composers, historical contexts, and cultural significance. We will examine excerpts from the libretti and discover how the Italian language comes alive through music, dialogue, and dramatic expression.
Students will also explore the world behind the performances, from the historical period in which each opera was created to the social and cultural ideas reflected in its characters and stories. Particular attention will be given to language, vocabulary, and pronunciation.
Through listening, discussion, close examination of scenes and performances, and cultural exploration, students will develop a deeper appreciation of Italian opera while strengthening their understanding of the Italian language and its cultural heritage.
About Fred Santambrogio:
They graduated in stage direction at the Academy of Teatro alla Scala and in Musicological and Performing Arts Disciplines at the University of Milan. For more than twenty years they have worked as a director both in Italy and abroad. They have collaborated with the Center for Contemporary Opera in New York, Cirque du Soleil, Shanghai Opera House and many others. In 2014 they founded the company Op.64_Solocanto whose aim is training in contemporary opera and its dissemination.
