Throughout history, many artists and creatives have been associated with mental health struggles. For example, many have speculated that Vincent Van Gogh suffered from Bipolar Disorder, while others, like Virginia Woolfe sadly lost their mental health battle. Applying what we know about mental health today, similar struggles seem to have afflicted famous artists throughout the Renaissance and Baroque eras, such as Michelangelo Buonarroti, Caravaggio, and Francesco Borromini.
Examining a few examples from the 1400s to the 1600s, this episode of Framed will focus on the connection between mental health and creativity, and the numerous questions that arise from this link. Is mental health an inevitable sacrifice made on the journey to true creativity and visionary thinking? Where does the line stand between vision and delusion? To what extent does lingering in our own imagination prove dangerous to those who wish to ease their pain through art?
