For many, Latin is a ‘dead language’, simply a part of the past that no longer applies to the present, but the truth is much more complicated and exciting! Latin is an integral part of the linguistic history of the Romance Languages, including, of course, Italian.
Learning Latin means opening a door to learning a myriad of languages. Not only is Latin a key ingredient in the linguistic make-up of Italian, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Romanian, but it is also an important piece of the English language as well. There are so many roots, prefixes, and suffixes in the English language that have been directly borrowed from Latin. This means learning Latin expands not only our understanding of English and many other languages, but also helps improve our linguistic performance in general.
Having an understanding of Latin means the opportunity for additional language learning is endless and this, in turn, leads to priceless benefits!
This 16-week beginner course is dedicated to building a solid foundation through a focus on grammar fundamentals and basic vocabulary. Additionally, through Latin language instruction, students will also take a look at ancient Roman history and culture.
Not only will this course introduce students to the wonderfully complex language that is Latin, it will also open their eyes to so many aspects of today’s spoken languages that rely on Latin as a foundation. This course will give students an immense advantage when it comes to learning new languages in the future!
